Spooky Saturday #3: Killer Ouija Boards?

I came across a rather interesting article this week (while preparing for Halloween)...killer Ouija Boards. No, they don't come to life wielding a butcher knife and the planchette doesn't fly across the room and stab someone. I'm talking about Ouija Boards TELLING people to murder. I read the article and i was HOOKED so i figured I'd share with you guys, my most awesome of readers haha!

#1:

Okay, so the first ever report of a Ouija Board "murder" that I could find was on November 8th 1933 in Prescott, Arizona. It started when Dorthea Turley and her fifteen year old daughter, Mattie, sat down to have a Ouija Board session. Dorthea was reportedly a regular user and firm believer in the power of the Ouija Board (eep!) and had apparently used it for a wide variety of purposes including financial advice to the location of a stash of hidden gold?  At some point during this specific session (where it became a murderer), the planchette hovered over the board CLEARLY giving Mattie instructions to kill her father after he was done milking the cows. Apparently Dorthea was all for this (?) and even encouraged Mattie by saying, "the board could not be denied." The board even assured Mattie that no one would ever find out about the murder (I feel like Dorthea was just LOOKING for a way out of that marriage haha). Apparently the two ladies even went as far as to contact the murderous spirit behind the board with cards just to confirm the plans. When Maddies father, Ernest Turley came in from milking the cows, Mattie immediately shot her father in the back two times as he was going about his day doing chores. Poor Ernest didn't die immediately though, he hung onto life for TWO WEEKS at the hospital. Soon after though, Dorthea and Mattie were arrested for the crime, and Mattie claimed that it had all been an accident. She said she had been walking about thirty feet behind her dad when she had tripped and the gun went off accidentally. The cops were NOT convinced though because Ernest had been shot twice in the same spot at close range and from an angle that quite literally would have been impossible with her story. Mattie finally gave in, confessed and said the board had told her to do it and that she could "not resist the dark power." Dorthea Turley was also arrested and it was discovered that she "may" have wanted her husband dead (called that before I even finished the story the first time haha) because she had another man that she had been having an affair with.  After it was all said and done, Mattie Turley was sent to a state reformatory school for attempted murder and received parole three years later. While Dorthea Turley was convicted of assault with intent to commit murder which she go a fifteen years to life sentence, but it was overturned in 1936 by the Arizona supreme court and she was freed.

Another odd case occurred in 1987, which resulted in the murder of a Vietnamese immigrant named Ngoc Van Dang. It started with a group of friends in Florida bound by their belief in Satanism and a fascination with the occult. (yay…) So, twenty-five year old Anthony Hall, his girlfriend a SIXTEEN year old girl named, Bunny Dixon (is this real? Haha), twenty-four year old Daniel Bowen, and eighteen year old Elizabeth Towne were SUPER involved in regularly casting Satanist spells and carrying out rituals but, it was Dixon who was most involved in contacting demons and spirits. She claimed that she had recently "met" a spirit of a ten year old boy named, David, and he had told her through the Ouija Board to go on a road trip, and to sacrifice a motorist along the way for money. Apparently everyone was all "that's a GREAT idea sixteen year old child named, Bunny" because they set out to prowl the streets of Orlando before their planned journey to Virginia where they had been "commanded" by the spirit to join a carnival (?) The two girls, Towne and Dixon, walked along the road pretending to hitchhike to lure people into their plan. Unfortunately for Ngoc Van Dang, he was kind enough to want to help. When Dang pulled over, the two men, Hall and Bowne, jumped out of hiding and robbed the man of $120 at gunpoint and then bound him and shoved him into the trunk to drive him to a secluded area north of Daytona Beach. When they got there, Dixon allegedly carved an inverted cross into Dang's chest in order to mark him as a sacrifice. Afterwards, Hall and Bowen shot him a total of seven times in the head, neck, and torso, killing him. They then put the body back into the trunk and dumped it in a secluded area off Interstate 95. Then, apparently Bowen and Towne both developed some sort of a conscience and shortly after, they felt regret in the whole ordeal and that they had been involved so they contacted the cops and admitted they had "witnessed a grisly murder." No one believed the story and all four people were arrested, but Dixon would deny carving the wound into Dang's chest, and Bowen stated that Hall and Dixon had carried out the shooting and he hadn't had any involvement. (essentially, no one was loyal….bunch of tattlers these kids). Hall who was suspected of being the one who was responsible for shooting Dang, claimed that Bowen had held him at gunpoint and forced him to shoot. He also said that he had only went along with this whole plan in the first place was because he had been under the influence of a "dark and satanic spell woven by Dixon and her Ouija Board spirit." Surprisingly (not) this did very little to convince the cops, judge, or jury and the group was convicted of the crimes including; kidnapping, robbery, burglary, and murder. These convictions earned Hall a death sentence, Bowen got life in prison, Dixon got fifty years, and Towne only got seventeen years.

Satanism played another role in a Ouija Board murder in 1995 in London, England when nineteen year old David McCallum and sixteen year old Pierre Antoine killed in what they claim to have been "forced to act out evil forces." (whatever that means) The two teenagers had played around with black magic and Satanism and had constructed a demonic shrine (BRILLIANT idea) in McCallums South London apartment. It was decorated with pictures of Satan, torture, heavy metal posters covered in demonic imagery, the numbers 666 written everywhere, various books on Charles Mason, and a candle lit alter to Satan and a Ouija Board. On December 2nd 1995, McCallum and Antoine invited two neighbors named Michael Earridge and Stephen Curran (both of them fifteen), to the apartment to have a session on the Ouija Board in front of their shrine. At one point the board spelled out "KILL," and it frightened Earridge to the point where he just wanted to leave and go home. When he was about to leave, Antoine (allegedly) forcefully stopped him from going, they got into an altercation, and Antoine struck Earridge in the head. That was when McCallum suddenly pulled out an eleven-inch long hunting knife and proceeded to violently stab Earridge in the head, neck, and chest while Curran stared in horror. Curran was then forced to touch the knife (to leave his fingerprints), and then they let him leave on the condition that he not tell anyone. The body was then wrapped in bedding and "unceremoniously" (i guess that's important to know?) stashed between the seventh and eighth floors of the apartment building. It didn't take long before Curran went and told McCallum's father about what happened, and the cops quickly rushed to the apartment to find McCallum sitting on the couch smiling, where he immediately confessed to the killing. When being questioned, McCallum said that he made animal sacrifices to demons before, but that was the first time he had killed a human. He also claimed that he had been forced by the demons from the Ouija Board to carry out the killing and so that means, he had no control over what he had done, which he called "demon madness."  McCallum even said himself about the incident: "All of a sudden, I started attacking him. A voice in my head said, `Kill him' The ouija board told me to buy the knife and the Demon Madness told me to kill him. The glass spelled out the words KILL." Due to him believing that it was not actually HIM that had committed the murder, and he had been influenced by demonic powers, McCallum plead to a manslaughter charge instead of murder. During the trial, it also was brought up that McCallum and Antoine had drank several bottles of wine before the murdered, but it's not proven how much this actually affected the murder. A psychiatrist said on the stand that he believed McCallum was mentally disturbed, suffered from severe schizophrenia, and couldn't be fully responsible for his actions. Somehow that convinced the jury that he wasn't fully responsible and he managed to avoid prison time and was sentenced to life at Broadmoor Mental Hospital.

Lastly, #4:

A more recent case that I have found, was on February 11th 2001 in Minco, Oklahoma. On this day, Carol Sue Elvaker was using a Ouija Board with her daughter, Tammy Roach and her two granddaughters who were fifteen and eleven (again with the CHILDREN playing with demons.) Elvaker apparently received a message from the board, that Tammy's husband, thirty-four year old former mayor of Minco, Brian Roach was "corrupted by evil and had to die." The women were so compelled that they went to the kitchen, got a knife, and went into the other room where Brian was SLEEPING to stab him in the chest. Unfortunately, he bled to death while laying there calling out for help while the others just left him there to die. (disgusting) Right after this incident, Evaker then turned the knife on her ten year old granddaughter, and frantically tried to kill her while Tammy Roach tried to stop her, she eventually did get the knife away. All of them then apparently got into the car and drove off in a rush (yes, because let's get into the car with your mother/grandmother who just tried to kill your child/you AND killed your husband/father…makes sense) Tammy wanted her mother escape the crime according to reports and it was a stupid decision because Evaker was driving and then promptly tried to kill them all by intentionally slamming the vehicle into some sort of traffic sign. After that didn't work, Evaker, who broke both ankles in the crash, tried to shove her fifteen year old granddaughter into oncoming traffic. This also failed, and Evaker hobbled off into the woods nearby and stripped down butt naked as she moved through the trees. As the cops showed up, they were shocked to say the least at what they saw, and they found Evaker quite quickly since….well…she was hiding in the trees butt naked with broken ankles. Evaker was eventually charged with first-degree murder in the death of her son in law, and sentenced to time in a psychiatric hospital. Tammy Roach was later convicted of being an accessory to murder, but the charges were later dropped. In the whole aftermath the cops later found out that despite what you would think, Evaker had NO history of mental illness or strange behavior and there was no sign of drug or alcohol use that evening and there was no history of substance abuse at any time in her life. There also had been ZERO signs of domestic problems in the household and they all seemed like a perfectly functional and happy family. It's all so weird, and a Grady County district attorney named, Brett Burns said after the trial that, "It's amazing how a grandmother was able to let this Ouija Board consume her life." In my opinion, I'd like to know the same honestly. Haha

So, were these actually evil commands from a malevolent spirit? Were these Ouija Boards just a scapegoat to reflect the blame? It's so weird to me. How do some of these people seem so normal, and yet they randomly go on a killing spree? Especially the last story….what person one: randomly decides to kill their son in law, then two: goes after their granddaughters not once, not twice, but three times? She was determined to literally kill a CHILD….I'm just so shocked at this. All I know is I have never touched a Ouija Board and I certainly don't plan on touching one now. Real or not, I don't need any vengeful spirits trying to settle some debts from the grave and possibly possessing me. I am SO not about that life. NOPE!

I hope you guys enjoyed this read, there are SO MANY more stories on the internet about these, i just don't have the time to type them all out haha I didn't even know that Ouija Board murders were even a thing, and while I knew people don't recommend them because of the possibility of opening portals, I would have NEVER thought spirits would murder from beyond. I guess It depends on if you believe in this stuff, but regardless Friends, let's not play with Ouija Boards okay?

Xx,
Autumn
